Job Group Summary
Underwriting directly helps our company achieve financial and strategic goals. As the financial professionals who identify and calculate risk, underwriters are charged with increasing revenues, earnings and membership while protecting the company from loss.
Support Aetna's ability to achieve its financial and strategic goals through effective Underwriting. Underwriting primarily includes identifying, evaluating, and managing risk in order to maximize revenue, membership and earnings.
Support underwriting functions as directed by supervisor in support of stated mission and key performance measures. This position involves technical work and some application of underwriting and pricing principles. The work is task driven.
Fundamental Components & Physical Requirements
·Assists in the development of underwriting policy consistent with plan objectives.
·Assesses and analyses medical underwriting risks, analyzes historical claims experience, and makes sound underwriting decisions based on established criteria and/ or medical judgments.
·Reviews all appeals and advises management of unusual situations.
·Provides clerical support for applications throughout underwriting process
·Enters information and maintains database for analysis and reporting requirements
·Ensures all reporting required by underwriting and other business departments are both timely and accurate
·Assists with the audit of the business development and PSS teams in the office to ensure that established underwriting practices are being followed and that business production and implementation adhere to the underwriting guidelines.
·Communicates directly with related departments in relation to risk assessment.
·Assesses, prepares and distributes quotations for medium and large group business
·Reviews and sign-off verification forms for allgroup quotations that are directly referred to the Underwriting unit for quotation (large group and small group non-standard risks)
·To keep up to date with changes in the law or the requirements of any regulatory body which may affect the conduct of the business.
·Recommend any changes to procedures that regulatory changes may require.
·To be familiar with the state of the marketplace in general and specifically our competitors.
Background Experience Desired
·1-2 years of relevant experience preferred
·Excellent presentation skills.
·Experience to a high level in use of Microsoft Access/Excel.
·Strong Numeracy qualifications.
·Some experience in the financial services sector with statistics/analytics background
·Fluent in written and spoken English.
·Experience making presentations to senior executives, brokers, insurers, etc.
Education and Certification Requirements
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
