Director -- Product Management / Development

Primary Location: Hartford, CT

To develop and oversee the execution of Aetna product strategy, standards, infrastructure and availability which result in increasing and retaining Aetna membership.

As a Director of Product Management, you’ll provide valuable, ongoing market insights for market leadership and set a product strategy that enables the local market to achieve their goals. We’ll count on you to build strong relationships with your direct reports, the local market team, corporate business partners and marketplace that increase your awareness of emerging customer needs. You’ll ensure the market has the right product mix that differentiates Aetna and helps our sales and account management teams win in the market. Fundamental Components:
Specific responsibilities include:
  • Cultivates and develops relationships with key constituents such as brokerage houses, consultants and customers, independently or in concert with Aetna senior leaders
  • Drives strategic direction, simplification & integration of local product portfolio, to include (but not limited to):
  • Framing of annual operating plan and three-year strategy
  • Aligning enterprise product development and strategy with local goals and operation plans
  • Leading ongoing market and competitive analysis to aid strategic decision making and development of key messaging/positioning (design together with Strategic Mktg)
  • Building alignment with – and in support of - segment specific business strategies i.e., cross sale initiatives
  • Influencing industry activity/trends and regulation through active participation on external industry groups/boards
  • Represents product strategic issues with senior managers cross-functionally
  • Leverages in-depth knowledge and understanding of products across functions and market segments in directing the development and implementation of new product initiatives, including product enhancements
  • Directs product analysis to gain a comprehensive understanding of internal and external environmental influences and competitive pressures. Incorporates results into strategic plan development and on-going product performance monitoring
  • Aligns supporting product manager and/or analyst on tactics needed to support strategy development and execution
  • Consults on / drives effective product offerings to customers to meet organizational goals
  • Monitors and reports key financial performance indicators to obtain effective product portfolio performance
  • Directs the establishment of large cross-functional development and implementation work groups, encouraging innovative use of resources to achieve objectives consistent with the strategic plan
  • Encourages cross-functional collaboration, supporting information needs to solve business issues and support project requirements
  • Communicates and consults with senior management to ensure that product initiatives focus on long term results/ earnings and represent all constituencies effectively (e.g. segments, consumers, providers)

Background Experience:
10+ years of related industry experience

Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
