Pharmacy Technician III acts as a resource in the processing of prescription orders addressing complex and/or escalated issues requiring understanding of the interactions, dependencies and operations of the facility. Functional areas include prescription order entry, failed claims, and /or other areas as assigned.

Fundamental Components:
  • Assists pharmacist to prepare and dispense medication.
  • Retrieve medication from stock, counts, packages and labels for review by pharmacist.
  • May retrieve medication from stock and fill automated dispensing equipment locations using proper procedures.
  • May fill and label prescriptions in automated dispensing systems.
  • Scan product bar code and prescription label to ensure completion of script.
  • Assist with inventory replenishment.Maintain station with adequate supplies.
  • Removes out of date/expired medications from shelves, receives and stores incoming supplies.
  • Count stock and enter data in computer to maintain inventory records.
  • Assure accountability for all controlled drug products in accordance with good pharmacy practice guidelines.
  • Reads, interprets and accurately enters prescription orders into pharmacy system.
  • Verifies pertinent information related to order processing which may include patient, physician, insurance, price codes, drug, quantities, directions and day supply.
  • Performs appropriate pharmacy calculations.
  • Insures adherence to all DEA, federal, state, and company policies and guidelines.
  • Creates and updates physician profiles in pharmacy system including demographics, DEA number, and NPI numbers.
  • May insure compliance with aspects of specialty insurance including Medicare and Medicaid.
  • When necessary may contact physician office for refill authorization.
  • May also perform duties as directed in the return reship departments.
  • May insure compliance with aspects of specialty insurance including Medicare and Medicaid.
  • May address and resolve insurance rejections to meet payer performance criteria.
  • Communicates with physician office via phone and/or fax, as provided by law, for clarification of prescription orders, requests for new prescriptions, or renewal of existing prescriptions.
  • When necessary may contact physician office for refill authorization.
  • Reviews, interprets and researches prescription orders.
  • May be required to contact physicians and/or members to gather and/or clarify information and provide status updates.
  • Assist pharmacist in all manners permitted by law in the physician call area.
  • Communicates with patients via phone regarding set up of monthly delivery of medication.
  • Confirms form of payment (credit, e-check).
  • Documents appropriate drug information in patient history profile, reviews for accuracy.
  • May also perform duties as directed in the return reship and failed claim departments.
  • Researches and resolves prescription order issues.
  • Reads prescription, reviews order entry and verifies accuracy of information processed.
  • Investigates and resolves external order errors.
  • Re-enters prescription order into pharmacy system, insures approval from physician and overrides from insurance carrier is received.
  • Completes error incident reports and enters into system.
  • Initiates, tracks and follows-up on UPS claims.Communicates with patients to gather and share appropriate information.
  • Assists pharmacist by acting as a resource in handling other duties as assigned. (*)


Background Experience:
  • Proficiency in computerized pharmacy systems and software applications required.
  • Understanding of specialty pharmacy medical and pharmacy terminology.
  • Technician must posses an active and clear of disciplines Registration with the Florida Board of Pharmacy.


Additional Job Information:
This position will consist mostly of data entry of specialty prescriptions into the patients profiles and trouble shooting rejections. Technician will be making calls to prescribers and or patients for clarifications and other issues until resolved as well as handle inbound calls from within the pharmacy to assist with orders, it is therefore important to have good communication skills. Minimal physical dispensing of medications required for this position. This position work closely with pharmacist and other departments within the pharmacy in order to ensure orders are completed on a timely manner and it is important that the technician works well in a team environment as well as independently.
