Group Medical Underwriter

Primary Location: Blue Bell, Pennsylvania

Description:
Performs underwriting analysis and risk assessment for new and/or renewal of large group contracts and accountings. Assigned cases/book of business may be limited to a single (or minimal number of) products, financial arrangements and/or rating methodologies.

Fundamental Components:
Prepares and delivers routine new business quotes and/or existing business renewals and/or accountings. Complexity of work increases as technical skills progress. Reviews work with mentor/manager and responds to requests for pricing and/or accounting balance alternatives based on financial analysis, underwriting principals and business strategy. Utilizes basic functionality of underwriting tools, systems, and reference materials to produce accurate quotes, renewals and/or accountings. Applies underwriting guidelines and escalates underwriting exceptions/financial variances for their assigned cases to the appropriate level. With supervision, assists sales personnel in explaining rate/fee, accounting balance development and communicating underwriting policy. Produces timely and accurate customer-specific documents, deliverables and accounting-related information. Conducts audits on premiums, fees and claim wires to ensure all receivables are accurate and accounted for. Tracks customer allowances or MBE/WBE goals using compliance guidelines. Assists department with projects or participates in work groups.

Background Experience:
Experience related to insurance, rating, underwriting and accounting concepts preferred.
Demonstrated success in a production-oriented environment meeting or exceeding production targets.
Demonstrated success in collaborating with others to meet/exceed expectations.
Demonstrated success prioritizing work and the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
Experience working with standard Microsoft Office products.
High School/GED or equivalent experience, bachelor’s degree preferred

Additional Job Information:
Support the Pennsylvania, Delaware and West Virginia market underwriting functions as directed by supervisor in support of stated mission and key performance measures. Supports the sales process by performing accurate underwriting analysis and risk assessment for renewal of large group contracts or sale of new contracts. Performs underwriting tasks under general supervision. This position involves technical work and application of underwriting, risk assessment, accounting and/or financial principles.
